ScaleABLE Story Factory - Writers in Residence Program in Scalea, ITALY
Program for Writers in Residence in Scalea is inspired by the ideas of Calabrian philosopher Gregorio Caloprese (Scalea, 1654-1715), who believed that a combination of science, literature and art together with healthy life on the seaside, friendship and collective spirit can do wonders to the development of the humanity.
In post-corona times of decentralisation and search of new meanings, we continue the tradition of Caloprese's free school for art, literature and philosophy practices.
The main concept of the residency is "Win back your time". It means that the time belongs to the individuum, but with the stressful life of the big city and the pressure of time VS money, we lose this mastery of our time. The artist in residence program is intended to grant to the artist the time: to exist in pleasant, unique atmosphere of a seaside town outside of vacation season, and to concentrate on advancing the work of your dream.
City of Scalea, South of Italy, is welcoming international writers for a production & research residence program, duration of 1-2 months with possible extension.
Participants of the program can be of any age or nationality, beginning or advanced in their career, writing in any language. You can use the residency with the existing project of a book or a novel, or to search for inspiration for a new one. It is possible but not obligatory to connect your story with the topos of Scalea or the local stories.
The residency program is founded by SCALEABLE Contemporary Art Museum and city development project Scalefornia.com.
The residency provides a comfortable lodging in the town near the sea, with a goal facilitate artist's need for spaces, materials, information, time and contacts.
The program creates possibility to integrate with the local community as well as to meet other participants of the artist-in-residence program, to share inspiration and to help each other with the building of the story. The program is a safe space where you can think, experiment, share, advice, fail, restart.
Dostoevsky publishing generously provides possibility on publishing the finished work. This possibility can be discussed separately.

Scalea is a city of sun, sea, fruits growing in publically accessible gardence, a fascinating stairs labyrinth of the historical centre, and vibrant atmosphere with lounge bars, inexpensive restaurants, wifi and hospitality.
Scalea is being overpopulated by tourists in high vacation season of July and August, but outside of this, it is ready to welcome artists who are able to enrichen the environment of this town.

To put the artists in contact with the local environment in order to provide extra sourse of inspiration and facilitate production of works on local material.

Make Scalea a place of vibrant artistic exchange, interaction, and collaboration. Use the possibilities of a beautiful place on the sea outside of the "high vacation season".

Expanding network
Create a network of artists and cultural producers with a reference to a specific place to work and meet with each other. .

In our post-industrial epoch producing the ideas, concepts and cultural insights becomes the main industry and we're proud to give it a fertile ground, some sun and opportunity to blossom.
HOW IT WORKS:
The program is open to people of any nationality and age. We consider a portfolio and intention / idea of the artist to develop. Each application is carefully considered by our internal team, and a longlist is presented to the external council, consisting of international experts and project sponsors.
The residence functions throughout a year, except for the months July and August.
You can come alone or with your partner / family. The costs for the partner or accompanying persons are not covered.

Please confirm your membership at scalefornia.com - at a one-time cost of 10 euro. Do it via PayPal or bank transfer, mentioning your name.
Step 3.
Your application is in selection process. You will be contacted back. In case you've been longlisted, you'll be asked for a videocall interview.
Step 4.
The selected artists are asked for another videocall to discuss the dates your needs and financial details of your stay.

- Possibility of publishing a book as a result of the residence in collaboration with Dostoevsky Publishing.
- Possibility of grant or individual sponsorship of the artist's travel and production expenses.
