Scaleable - Contemporary Art Museum of ScaleaIn 2021, we feel challenged to reinvent the old “boring” concept of a museum as a place of conserving the past.
WHAT IS A MUSEUM? A
museum is not a building, not a set of walls, not a collection of images and objects and not even a program of exhibitions.
A museum is how we look at the things. It’s a prism, a platform, a physical and mental trigger to interact and learn about ideas, visions and inspirations.
A new museum must correspond to the dynamic changes in human society and new demands for the role of art in creating a better version of future for everyone. Our museum, instead of a static place, becomes
a constantly evolving platform for exchange of thoughts and ideas by means of art, science and technology.
CollectionWe don't focus on collecting objects. Instead, we collect
ideas, thoughts,
topics, and present art works corresponding with our approach.
MissionWe call ourselves “contemporary art museum”, however we constantly search a way to challenge and reconsider the existing concept of
Contemporary Art itself. Previously, it has been seen as an isolated and privileged bubble world focused on a constant dialogue with itself.
We aim for contemporary art to step out of this narcissistic bubble, and address
crucial issues for the future of the humanity and the planet.
The central
topic for the coming projects is creating a better life for the future generations, by focusing on the important aspects of the society and ecology.
We believe that by drawing new attention focuses and searching new ways to see the worlds, the artists are able to reconsider “the rules of the game”: the ways the humans live, produce and consume, love, grow their children, think and see, and the ways the decisions are taken.
Our goal is to shift the focus of the world, from the “success”, constant race of technology into human empathy, connection and reinventing balance between the human society and the
nature. We want the art to interact with the local communities and build bridges with new technologies, sciences and production industries, in order to make the world more “humane”, open and interacting.
And we’re happy to foster such art and to provide it with a platform for realisation of their dreams.
How we make it?We collaborate with
curators and
institutions on each specific project. Each project is based on the personalized curatorial approach: a deep
theme research, interaction and collaboration in different fields and as a result a combination of an exhibition, a printed publication, a digital platform and a series of events, engaging the visitors and local population into active dialogue and activities.
WHERE?The head department of the Museum is based in
Scalea, South of Italy. Scalea is a place with rich history, situated between the warm sea and spectacular mountain, where both the communal authorities and the local population are open to welcome the new creative initiatives. The museum is a part of a project Scalefornia: turning Scalea into an international creative community.
The whole
old town becomes a platform for The Museum on the open air, and available buildings can be repurposed and designated as locations for pop-up
exhibitions,
production labs and
events.
StructureThe Museum is not only exhibition space, it’s a
collaboration hub, research laboratory and a space for discussions and
learning. We invite artists, curators and writers for an
artistic residency, where they can ask questions, doubt, search new ways, create new works, while being actively involved with local community and environment.
The museum is paired with the
New Academy of Intensive Learning -the educational institution focusing on art, culture, curating, processing information and practicing in different innovative fields.
Besides, the museum has its own
publishing house,
library and
collaboration spaces. Our museum program is broadened with
festivals,
workshops, conferences and other
events throughout a year.
There is also a fast growing group of
partnering businesses and institutions, who support the museum’s initiatives and collaborate with us on different levels.
Our
interests extend as wide as make art co-involve with innovative farming, startup incubator for avant-guard food production and a research centres for human longevity and brain activity.
SCALEABILITYWe call the Museum “Scaleable” as a wordplay.
Scalea is the name of the town which generously hosts our museum’s initiative. It’s “able” because we believe in the almost endless ability of individuals and groups to be creative and to bring a positive change. As a whole, our “scaleable” museum model can be scaled up and be projected in any place of the world, with the use of our strategy, knowledge and network.
